Get the
Lowdown on J. Low
The original J. Low, that is—Juliette Gordon Low—was a woman ahead of her time and the founder of the Girl Scout Movement. Visit the beautiful city of Savannah, Georgia, and experience life the way it was "back in the day" (late 19th century and the early days of the 20th century).
Picture It
The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace—the home where Juliette was born and raised—is a registered National Historic Landmark. You can tour the house museum, see Juliette's artwork, and hear stories about life in her day. Juliette was passionate about giving girls opportunities to have adventures and be independent and creative. Experience the spirit and vision behind Girl Scouts, while you choose from all kinds of do-it-yourself workshops, all related to life over 100 years ago! In addition to the sessions listed here, groups can partner with staff to customize their own "destinations" experiences. Make your reservations today!
Special-interest sessions to choose from on visits to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace include: (Visits include one choice only.)
Come into my Parlor: Girls have always wanted to have fun! Travel back to Daisy's (Juliette's nickname) times and relive the fun girls had "in the parlor" (living room). Games, dramatics, singing, and other amusements, delight girls today as they did the young ladies of yester year.
Fashion, Fabric, and Frills: Explore fashions of the 1800's, discover the difference between a hoop and bustle skirt, and glimpse life back then through old advertisements, prints, and cartoons. Ages 13-18 only.
Forward March: March back in time to commemorate the first years of Girl Scouting. See the first Girl Scout movie, investigate old handbooks and uniforms, and reenact musical plays and skits popular with early Girl Scouts.
Pop Goes the Weasel: A Textile Adventure. Juliette Low taught her first Girl Guides to spin. Try your own hand at spinning and weaving while learning about fibers and how they are processed.
Rainy Day in 1870: Dress up in costumes and go back in time to a rainy day during Daisy Gordon's childhood. Cut silhouettes, paper dolls, and tinsel pictures; use a fan, and create an embroidered bookmark. 11-year olds only.
Sisters of the Palette: We remember Juliette Gordon Low as our founder, but she was also an artist. Learn about her work and that of other women artists. Try your hand at sculpting, Daisy's favorite medium, as well as other arts.
Victorian Venture: Come to tea and experience the pastimes of a Victorian-era young lady, like using a fan, writing in a fancy hand, and making a scrap art box. Ages 12-14 only.
In addition to one special interest session, girls 15-18 may also participate in:
Victorian Supper: Savannah Style: Re-create the manners, customs, and conventions of a Victorian dinner party. Wear a costume while enjoying a traditional 19th century dinner. Eat typical southern cooking prepared by a local restaurant. Ages 15-18 only.
