Katherine E. Kleeman is senior program associate at the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She writes or edits many CAWP and Eagleton Institute publications, including web sites, newsletters, reports and proposals. Ms. Kleeman co-authored two recent CAWP publications – "Legislating By and For Women," describing CAWP's research about the impact of women in the 103rd and 104th Congresses, and "Term Limits and the Representation of Women," highlighting findings from a CAWP conference of legislators, activists, and practitioners as well as related research about the effect of term limits on women's representation in state legislatures. Among her earlier publications are: Voices, Views, Votes: The Impact of Women in the 103rd Congress (co-written with a CAWP research team); and Women Make a Difference (co-authored with Kathy Stanwick) and Women's PACs, both part of CAWP's series of reports on "Bringing More Women into Public Office." She also prepared a discussion guide for the documentary film Not One of the Boys, produced by CAWP and aired in 1984 on the PBS series Frontline.

From 1990 - 1994, Ms. Kleeman directed CAWP's NEW Leadership program under a four-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Ms. Kleeman also directed CAWP's participation in the Hispanic Women Leadership Institute, working with Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago of Rutgers' School of Social Work in Camden to pilot this new program for New Jersey women. She organized the four-day New Jersey segment of the 1988 National Hispana Leadership Initiative, a year-long training program for 19 Hispanic women leaders from around the nation. In 1994 she represented CAWP at two international women's conferences in Japan.

Ms. Kleeman earned her A.B. at Radcliffe College and her Ed. M. at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. Before coming to New Jersey, she worked for Harvard/Radcliffe and for Georgetown University in student services.

The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) is a university-based research, education and public service center. Its mission is to promote greater understanding and knowledge about women's participation in politics and government and to enhance women's influence and leadership in public life.

The Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University explores state and national politics through research, education, and public service, linking the study of politics with its day-to-day practice. The Institute focuses attention on how contemporary political systems work, how they change, and how they might work better. Eagleton's faculty, centers and programs specialize in the study of: state legislatures; public opinion polling and survey research; women's participation in politics; race and politics; campaigns, elections and political parties; civic education and political engagement; and New Jersey politics. The Institute includes the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) and the Center for Public Interest Polling (CPIP), both established in the early 1970's.
