About 2003 Wider
Ops
A Message to Parents and Guardians
Designed around the interests of young women today, Wider Ops provide fun and challenging opportunities for girls to get strong, acquire skills, and make friends. One and two week travel adventures for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts are sponsored by Girl Scout councils, Girl Scouts of the USA--the national organization, Girl Guide Associations and Outward Bound USA. Each outing is carefully supervised. Many bring girls in contact with experts in a field, like geologists, marine biologists, and computer professionals. Every Wider Op is an unforgettable experience.
As always, health and safety are our first concern. Preparations often includes a period of team building and preparation at a base camp, with skill checks and safety drills.
Wider Ops vary in size, theme and cost. Fees generally include everything except transportation to and from the starting location, some special equipment, and the required physical exam. Several ways to help meet costs are part-time jobs; strategies for money-earning projects offered by some councils; and limited travelships from GSUSA. Ask for details about these when applying.
Because Wider Ops are so popular, not every girl will get her first choice, and some will find that admissions have closed to all events they applied for. However, girls are invited to apply again the following year. Descriptions in the catalog are written far in advance, so aspects of an event may change at the last minute. Sponsors will send more specific information after acceptance.
